As a result of graduating from the Bachelor of Music program (Boston University 1963), but subsequently watching the liberal arts process as a teacher (Brown University, 1971-75) and an advocate for education that integrates study of the arts alongside study of different subjects. That's not so surprising for an ethnomusicologist (MA 1967, PhD at UCLA)! The program I am in, ethnomusicology, that was started in 1975 at UC Berkeley in 1975-1976, is located within an music department within a College of Letters and Science. The ability to pursue multiple subjects is something I love. I really enjoy teaching both undergraduates (majors as well as non-majors which is why I've written three books - Music in India Music in India: Classical Traditions, Thinking Musically, and Music in Japan: Experiencing music, Experimenting with Culture) and graduate students. It is my case that I'm primarily a professor as well as periods during which I do administrative work (such as the Chair of Department of Music, 1983-1988 and Director of Undergraduate Advising 1992-1998 and Chair of Deans at the College of Letters and Science in 1994-98).
